Komal Shahzad is a London-based pattern designer and printmaker. Her practice incorporates the relationship between digital and traditional printmaking techniques, in which the boundary is tested and explored.

Recent work has entered on the immense beauty and complexity of butterflies, in particular their wings, camouflage patterns and scales. These scales are modified flattened “hairs”, and provide butterflies and moths with an extraordinary variety of colours and patterns. When explored through digital means, these scales are lost to pixelated confusion, perhaps reflecting a defence response to the dominance of technology in our times.
